From Then

A black and white photo of the beginnings of the school

Ten of the twelve Mercer County school districts formed an agreement to create Mercer County Career Center. They include:
Commodore Perry
Greeville
Grove City
Hermitage
Jamestown
Lakeview
Mercer
Reynolds
Sharpsville
West Middlesex

The purchase of a 95.6 acre site in Coolspring Township, and the hiring of a School Director in July 1970, culminated more than a decade of discussion regarding the establishment of a vocational school in Mercer County.

In October 1970, more than 100 civic, industrial, business and educational leaders attended the groundbreaking ceremonies for the $4.5 million facility. The turn of the spade signified the beginning of construction and buried the idea that the only path to achieving success is to travel the road to college. This partnership continues to grow and evolve so that students in Mercer County have the option to learn skills that lead to rewarding careers

Black and white photo of the school building

  1. More than 200 individuals took part in the planning of the school and school programs.

  2. A crowd of 10,000 attended the dedication and open house of the school on September 16, 1973.

  3. Students first attend the vocational facility during the 1973-74 school years.

  4. Although the name of the school was changed to Mercer County Career Center in August 1992, formerly Mercer County Area Vocational-Technical School, the commitment to quality education has remained constant.

  5. Thousands of our graduates have achieved success and are currently employed in businesses and industries throughout Mercer County and across the country.

  6. Our commitment was to develop new and innovative programs that enabled the Career Center to offer students educational opportunities that prepared them for the future. This still remains true to this day.
